La Chopinière du Roy In the great family of Independent Winegrowers

A family estate with 9 generations of winegrowers since 1850, La Chopinière du Roy perpetuates the spirit of authenticity of Loire wines! In Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, discover a 29-hectare vineyard producing red and rosé wines from the Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil appellation, as well as Bourgueil wines, Crémant de Loire and a dry white wine combining Chenin and Chardonnay grapes.

Two experiences not to be missed

The Ory family offers a range of tours to suit all tastes. One of the most popular is a visit to the estate accompanied by a history of the Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil appellation: through a tour of the cellar and winery, the winegrowers are happy to share their expertise. Their ancestor Adrien ORY was one of the founders of the appellation in 1937! The guided tour will immerse you in the history of the family, the estate and the terroirs of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil.

A slightly longer visit to the troglodyte cellar, combined with a tasting of old vintages, is also more exceptional! In an attractive 4km-long cellar, you are immersed in the heart of the hillside, up to 17 metres beneath the vines, for a privileged tasting of wines that are a few years old. Every sip of history is worth savouring… what a great gift idea!

The estate of La Chopinière du Roy

As well as paying a visit, you can also just pop into the cellar to taste the latest vintages and buy… whatever you like! The estate is open all year round: Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 7pm, and Sunday from 10am to 12pm (booking recommended).

The estate is a member of the Independent Winegrowers’ Association (Vignerons Indépendants) and takes part in the Independent Winegrowers’ Picnic, an event organised every year during the Whitsun weekend. The same spirit of conviviality also prevails at Easter on the farm, with a meal of fouées (April), for the rando-grillade in May, and on the occasion of the gourmet days organised by the Ory family in October (meal organised with a caterer). Yes, it’s always a good time to push open the door of La Chopinière du Roy!

Medal-winning wines

The 12 arpents cuvée was awarded 3 stars in the Hachette wine guide, while the Coquelicot cuvée won a gold medal at the Lyon international competition in 2025. The Sous la Robe cuvée also won gold at the Ligers competition in 2024.

The wines of saint-nicolas-de-bourgueil AOC

In the Loire Valley, the appellation lies between Tours and Angers, west of Bourgueil and north of Chinon. The variety of terroirs (sandy-gravel soils, tuffeau, silt-gravel, etc.) allows each cuvée to express distinct characteristics.

On a human scale, the Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil AOC comprises around 1,050 hectares of vines, managed by around a hundred winegrowers. The Cabernet Franc grape variety reigns supreme here, producing typical red wines with a fruity, elegant profile, supple tannins, a delicious nose, aromas of cherry, blackberry, raspberry, etc. and a lovely freshness (serving temperature to balance tannins and aromatic expression. Serving temperature: 16 to 18 degrees). It is also made into a dry rosé, with an attractive salmon-pink colour. This time it should be served at around 8 to 10°C.

Food and wine pairings

Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil wines go particularly well with charcuterie, stewed meats, dishes in sauce and strong cheeses.
