Car-free holidays

How about leaving your car at the garage whilst you’re on holiday? This is a perfectly viable option in Touraine, where you can get around using other modes of transport.

How do I get there? And how do you get about without a car?

The Touraine region is fortunate to have excellent rail links, thanks toa dense network of Regional Express Trains and the Paris–Bordeaux TGV line, which stops at Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (5 minutes from Tours via a rail shuttle). Coach services have also expanded significantly in recent years (FlixBus and Blablacar Bus), offering attractive fares. Finally, car-sharing apps round off the range of options!

Once you’re there, visit www.jvmalin.fr to find a suitable transport option (train, bus, tram, bike, etc.) to reach your destination. You can even hire bikes!

RÉMI Découverte Pass

For travel throughout the Centre-Val de Loire region, the RÉMI Découverte pass (Regional Inter-city Transport Network) offers a flat-rate fare of €45 for 2 days or €60 for 3 days, for a group of up to 5 people.

A car-free holiday, but… by bike!

For a unique holiday, cycle along the cycle routes that wind through the landscapes of the Loire Valley. Enjoy the countryside and explore the towns, vineyards and châteaux of Touraine as you travel.Nearly 400 providers hold the ‘Accueil Vélolabel, particularly accommodation providers, who offer services tailored to cycle tourists. Mix things up with routes such as ‘La Loire à Vélo’, ‘Cœur de France à vélo’, ‘Cyclo Bohème ’ and ‘Saint Jacques à Vélo’.

For day trips or half-day excursions, there are over 60 signposted cycle loops. Bike hire companies offer standard bikes, as well as tandems, e-bikes and child trailers.

OR ON FOOT!

The townsof Amboise, Tours, Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau and Chinon are linked by the GR®3. And one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela starts in Tours, heading towards Poitiers, Bordeaux… and then Santiago de Compostela, of course!
