A poet and politician, Aimé Césaire has always affirmed his belonging to the people of Martinique and his roots in negritude, whose name he coined. In solidarity with the struggles for dignity, justice and freedom, he raises his voice in revolt against all that denies humanity.
As a poet and politician, Aimé Césaire never ceased to express his allegiance to the people of Martinique, his roots in negritude (he invented the word), and his unwavering solidarity with those throughout the world who are fighting for dignity and justice, freedom and peace in the fraternity of peoples and cultures. His anger is that of a man revolted against everything that invalidates humanity in man, his voice that of those who, "in the dungeon of despair", have none. césaire is a "universal Negro", and there is no poetry in the French language that has not carried "the magical power of the Mahoulis", the necessary "revitalization of forgotten fraternities" and "the strength to look to tomorrow" as high and as far as his own.
