The arts district in Tours a creative journey to the heart of Old Tours

Hiding between the historic streets of Old Tours is a veritable treasure trove of creativity: the Quartier des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the tourist trade, let yourself be guided through this artistic maze where some twenty artists’ studios and craftspeople bring their passion to life. Wander the streets of Petit-Saint-Martin and Grand Marché, push open the doors of the galleries and studios, and plunge into a world where every encounter becomes an invitation to wonder.

At the heart of rue du Petit-Saint-Martin

Over the years, this historic district has seen the birth of a bustling craft life. Push open the door of the Boite Noire, an emblematic gallery where contemporary works dialogue with medieval architecture. A little further on, Mélanie Lusseault’s Rouge Pistache studio invites you to discover her colourful creations. We owe this artistic renaissance to Jean Royer, a visionary mayor who offered artists municipal premises at moderate prices. Today, the parcours artistique takes you from studio to studio, where Laurent Vermeersch and around twenty other creators perpetuate this beautiful dynamic, far from the hustle and bustle of the tourist streets.

Meet the artists

Immerse yourself in this vibrant artistic community every first Saturday of the month. The Quartier des artisans association organises demonstrations where creators passionately share their secrets. Come and chat with a presence from the twenty or so artists who bring these unique venues to life.

On weekends, the workshops come alive in new ways. From impromptu vernissages to ephemeral exhibitions, every visit holds its share of surprises. Discover the new creations, watch the artists at work and let yourself be carried away by this atmosphere where tradition and modernity merge harmoniously.

Workshops open their doors

Come along every Wednesdayafternoon for unique demonstrations where craftsmen share their trade secrets. Witness the birth of a stained glass window, observe the meticulous restoration of an antique binding, or admire the transformation of a simple piece of wood into a musical instrument.

On weekends in December, don’t miss le Petit Bazar, a festive event where local designers transform their workshops into veritable ephemeral galleries. Also take advantage of the Journées Européennes des Métiers d’Art in spring, a great time to discover exceptional demonstrations and take part in introductory workshops.

A free guided tour is offered every first Friday of the month at 3pm, bookable through the association. The perfect opportunity to unravel the mysteries of this creative neighbourhood and meet its talented residents.

Between tradition and contemporary creation

Craftsmanship of excellence in a preserved historic medieval setting.

A walk through history and creation

Let the ancient stones tell you their story as you wander these alleyways where contemporary art converses with medieval heritage. On the facades, look out for the artistic signposts that guide your steps to the hidden studios.

In this unique setting, take time to watch the artists at work through the windows. The rustle of tools and the scent of worked wood waft from the workshops, creating a unique atmosphere where time seems suspended.
