Travel to the heart of the Vouvray vineyards

Welcome to Vouvray, where the troglodyte cellars offer an immersive journey. Beneath the limestone soils of the Loire Valley, the tuffeau shelters a treasure trove: kilometres of galleries transformed into spectacular cellars, home to the famous wines of Vouvray.

Dive into the history of troglodyte cellars

Originally dug to extract tufa stone, these galleries have been extending beneath the Vouvray vineyards for centuries. Don’t hesitate to stop off for a refreshing bubble: their natural temperatures (between 10 and 12°C) make them the perfect place for maturing and preserving the sparkling, dry or sweet wines specific to the Vouvray appellation. Not only do these cellars provide welcome coolness in summer, they also offer total immersion in the region’s wine-growing culture.

How is “Vouvray” Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée wine produced?

Produced from the Chenin Blanc grape variety planted in 8 communes, this wine is carefully crafted to capture the aromas of the terroir. After the harvest, it is matured directly in the cellars to become sparkling or still wines. Vouvray producers use these natural spaces to refine the flavours of their wines, using different vinification techniques depending on the estate. The mineral freshness of these troglodytic cellars is closely linked to the taste of Vouvray. On your marks, get set, taste…

You’ll be amazed by the sheer size of the cellar itself: over 3 km, 6 million bottles enjoy ideal conditions in which to mature, starting with a temperature of 12°, which you’ll particularly appreciate in the summer heat.

Les Grandes Caves Saint-Roch: between modernity and tradition

Would you like to discover a great wine house? This is it!

In Rochecorbon, Maison Lacheteau – Grandes Caves Saint-Roch is offering a sensory experience with an olfactory tasting. In the cellars, test your skills: can you recognise the aromas exhaled in tinted glasses? Subtle aromas of vanilla, liquorice or banana – it’s up to you! It’s a fun and surprising activity that the whole family can enjoy. The Grandes Caves Saint-Roch also have several kilometres of underground galleries, where the temperature fluctuates between 10 and 12°. Refreshing!

As well as quarrying tufa stone to build the châteaux and houses on the banks of the Loire, learn that before becoming a place to rest barrels and bottles, these cellars were home to mushroom beds, silkworm farms and even an underground refuge. Let yourself be surprised by an original activity: book with Trottxway and discover the cellars on an electric scooter too!
