Around 1630, Richelieu had Free the château of Richelieu built making it the largest château ever built before Versailles. It was destroyed in 1805 except for the dome, the orangery and the wine storehouse.
After having surveyed "the ideal city" of Richelieu, a 17th century model of town planning, it is good to follow the river of the park with centuries-old chestnut trees which sheltered the castle of the cardinal. Built around 1630 by the architects of Louis XIII, it was the largest castle in France ever built before Versailles. Of this vast building demolished in the 19th century, only a pavilion, the orangery and the winery remain.
