In the shade of hundred-year-old oak trees, a fun orienteering race awaits adventurers of all ages.

A fascinating, multi-faceted castle

Perched high above the estate, the château de Candé is a silent witness to five centuries of history. Built during the Renaissance by a mayor of Tours, it underwent profound transformations under the impetus of Santiago Drake del Castillo and his son. The arrival of Charles Bedaux, a Franco-American businessman, brought a touch of modernity that was impressive for its time: Art Deco bathrooms, an American telephone exchange, a Skinner organ that was unique in France… But Candé is also a place of historic romance, marked by the controversial marriage of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson in 1937. It’s a fascinating past that will plunge you into a bygone era, with its splendour and hidden secrets.

In the footsteps of wedding of the century

On 3 June 1937, the eyes of the whole world were riveted on the Candé estate. In the castle library, the Duke of Windsor, former King of England, was uniting his destiny with that of Wallis Simpson. It was an intimate ceremony, with just sixteen guests, yet it left its mark on history. Today, relive this unique moment by wandering through the drawing rooms where the lovers carved their names on the woodwork, a moving testimony to their passage.

The “Windsor Wedding”themed tour takes you behind the scenes of this extraordinary event. From period photographs to personal objects, every detail tells the story of this couple who shook the British monarchy for love.

A day in the woods

Take a break at the organic vegetable garden, where gardeners share their passion for old varieties. Children will love the orienteering race dotted with riddles about local flora and fauna. For art lovers, contemporary installations dot the paths, creating a unique dialogue between heritage and modern creation.
