This is THE idea for anyone spending a few days in Chinon! Hire a bike in Chinon and take a gentle ride through beautiful countryside along the Richelieu Chinon greenway. The ride is full of surprises!

Itinerary from Chinon to Richelieu

Treat yourself to a lovely 20-kilometre jaunt (40km return) between two rich towns with exceptional heritage. Without difficulty, the greenway criss-crosses a very beautiful area to discover via a dedicated app, and along 5 themed stations (gastronomy, viticulture, heritage, natural area, François Rabelais) and 3 refurbished former railway stations. Along the way, the green star at the restaurant Les Jardiniers will encourage you to take a break. Unless you’re too impatient to discover the Château du Rivau a little further on, with its fairytale gardens, two restaurants, a collection of contemporary works, and even a hotel! Featuring a remarkable ornithological observatory, l’étang d’Assay is the next stop, followed by la maison de l’abeille at Champigny-sur-Veude. One last pedal stroke: you’re in Richelieu, the town of the Cardinal!

Departure and arrival the Richelieu Chinon greenway

Below Chinon’s royal fortress, wander the town’s medieval streets and grab a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants. The wine tasting of the local AOC or a boat trip on the Vienne are two other great options! In Richelieu, a visit to the museum will introduce you to the history of the town, which boasts no fewer than 18 private mansions, not to mention moats, ramparts and monumental gates. Then it’s time to explore the ideal city of Louis XIII’s Minister of State, before taking a stroll in the large adjoining park.
