Cycling in the heart of France Cher Valley and Berry Canal

More commonly known as... the Cher by bike!

What a pleasure it is to cycle along the water. Accompanied here by birdsong, there by the shimmer of the sun on the surface of the water, pedal quietly as close as possible to the surrounding nature. It’s the promise of a serene, peaceful and enjoyable holiday!

Where the Berry canal begins

A tributary of the Loire, the Cher joins the royal river near the magnificent gardens of Villandry, at the very spot where the association Endremage (traditional boat trip) has its home port. Naturally, we can only encourage you to take a trip to this confluence, but the Cœur de France à Vélo itinerary starts in Tours, on the Ile Balzac. The banks of the canal offer an ideal playground for cyclists, between heritage and nature.

Cycling in the heart of France A new calf-powered route

Cycling holidays are a big hit, with many cycle tourists setting off along La Loire à Vélo, the Cyclo Bohème, or Saint-Jacques à vélo. You can now tackle a new playground with the itinéraire Cœur de France à vélo (la véloroute n°46), a verdant route along the banks of the Val de Cher and the Canal de Berry.

COMING BY TRAIN DURING THE SUMMER

In July and August, load your bike into specially equipped carriages on the Tours<> Bourges<> Nevers line. Reservation is compulsory on weekends and public holidays (€1 fare, in addition to your ticket).

The beautiful stages of the Cœur de France à Vélo itinerary

As you leave the capital of Tours on the north bank of the river, heading for Montrichard, Vierzon and Bourges, the urban environment quickly disappears. To the right, the Cher, to the left, fields and woods, and in front of you… the holidays!

château de Nitray (visit and wine tasting at the estate / restaurant La Table du vigneron in fine weather), take time to admire a pretty lock-keeper’s house.

After crossing the river on the bridge at Azay-sur-Cher, continue on the south bank towards Bléré, where you can eat or sleep at the campsite, but also make a short diversions to discover the Edouard André park, at Civray-de-Touraine.

Return to the north bank a few kilometres further on, at the Canoë Company base (canoe hire, restaurants with the Bistro’Quai and camping River Camp!). Before visiting the château de Chenonceau, take the opportunity to go paddling under its arches! Note that Aventure Canoë also offers a royal escape to the famous château from the next lockhouse, in Chisseaux.

That said, if you’d rather save your energy for cycling, hop aboard one of the boats run by compagnie La Bélandre!

What’s next? The medieval town of Montrichard, then from 2025, Saint-Aignan and its famous zoo de Beauval! From there, join the Canal de Berry, heading for Vierzon, Bourges (its immense cathedral, the Palais Jacques Cœur…) and Montluçon.

Two major cycling loops

In addition to a route from point A to point B, the connections of the Coeur de France à vélo itinerary to other cycle routes make it possible to plan loop holidays in Touraine, which allow you to return to your point of departure.

Example of a loop via Amboise

  • Day 1: from Tours to Chenonceaux on Coeur de France à vélo (27 km)
  • Day 2: from Chenonceaux to Amboise on the Loire à Vélo (20 km)
  • Day 3: from Amboise to Tours on the Loire à Vélo (30 km)

Example of a loop via Loches

  • Day 1: from Tours to Chenonceaux on Cœur de France à vélo (27 km)
  • Day 2: from Chenonceaux to Loches on the Cyclo Bohème (33 km)
  • Day 3: from Loches to Tours, on the Cyclo Bohème then Saint-Jacques by bike (49 km).

Extend your itinerary

Of course, it’s up to you to add “bike-free” days so you can visit (the Château de Chenonceau, the Royal Château d’Amboise, or the Royal City of Loches) and extend the pleasure!
