*Eating a Seal* takes on the rebellion of the imagination in a society where desire has been frozen. It is a magnificent and sensitive story that offers warmth in response to this question: Is there a better future? It follows the journey of Picot, a nine-year-old boy, his brother, his sister, feral animals that have escapedfrom a zoo, a Russian driver who is said to have once eaten a seal, and an elderly Asian woman who is losing her memory. All of them face grief, poverty, migration, a frozen society, and a future predicted to be bleak and hopeless. Fantasy as a precious balm. A dreamlike journey toward joy. Ages 9 and up.
