The Place du Général de Gaulle: setting for the fountain

Take a seat on the sunny terraces surrounding the Trois Grâces fountain! Cafés and restaurants welcome you for a gourmet break facing this historic monument. The water jets create a gentle melody to accompany your moments of relaxation.

Let yourself be seduced by the very special atmosphere of this square, where the magnificent buildings tell the story of Chinon. Between two visits, savour a local speciality as you admire the central basin and its delicate pedestal mouldings glistening in the Touraine sunshine.

As the seasons go by, this place of authentic life vibrates to the rhythm of the markets, festivals and events that make up the charm of Chinon’s art de vivre.

Who are the Three Graces?

The daughters of Zeus! Aglaia embodies splendour and radiant beauty, while Euphrosyne personifies joy and gladness. Thalie, meanwhile, represents abundance and prosperity.

Watch their eternal dance on the Chinon fountain, where these three goddesses stand gracefully, their entwined silhouettes creating a perfect circle. Their delicate gestures and harmonious poses tell a thousand-year-old story that continues to enchant visitors.

A masterpiece by the Ducel foundry

Go to place du Général de Gaulle to contemplate this nineteenth century masterpiece, made by the fonderie Ducel founded in 1823 and based in Pocé-sur-Cisse. The terraces of the surrounding cafés offer an ideal vantage point from which to appreciate this ballet frozen in bronze.

Abundance, elation… impossible not to make the connection with a personality inseparable from Chinon: François Rabelais and his truculent character of Gargantua.

A legacy of Catherine de Médicis

Other fountains featuring these three deities adorn many towns in France, including Montpellier, Bordeaux, Nice, Guéret and Fontainebleau. They are modelled on a funerary monument (on display in the Louvre) commissioned by Catherine de Medici on the death of her husband Henry II (son of Francis I). The Three Graces carry a copper vase containing the king’s heart.
