Built in 1180 by Henry II Plantagenet, the Chartreuse du Liget is the only Carthusian monastery in Touraine and is therefore a truly exceptional and unique site.
The Chartreuse du Liget is one of the very first Carthusian monasteries built in Europe in the 12th century. Built by Henry II Plantagenet in 1180 as penance for the murder of Thomas Becket, it is the only representation of the order in Touraine and is therefore quite exceptional. Cosme Edmond de Marsay acquired it in 1837, saving it from almost certain destruction. It was listed as a historic monument in January 2015, and is considered to be the only one of its kind in the region. Explore what remains of this Carthusian monastery, cloister and chapel and appreciate its importance and architectural richness.
