In 1532, François 1er was with his court in Chinon. Anxious to preserve his support, François Rabelais returned to his native region. He took the opportunity to visit his family. His father was in the middle of a court case: Gaucher de Sainte Marthe, seigneur de Lerné, was opposed to the "Communauté des Marchands et Bateliers de Loire". The beginnings of the Picrocholine Wars are dictated by this trial, in which Gaucher de Sainte Marthe is likened to Picrochole, the ambitious, ridiculous one, and Antoine Rabelais, lawyer for the "Communauté des Marchands et Bateliers de Loire", to the good Grandgousier.
