Braye-sous-Faye is a very old commune. It has been occupied since Neolithic times. Numerous sarcophagi have been found, the stones of which were used to build houses, enclosure walls and even part of the bell tower.

The commune was the birthplace of the Cardinal de Richelieu family, and was one of two vigueries (the viguier dispensed justice) in the area.
