Marcilly-sur-Vienne, which depended on Château de la Motte, is first mentioned as Marciliacus in an 11th-century charter from the Abbey of Noyers. The village church is a handsome 15th-century edifice resembling a seigniorial chapel. Built by the de la Jaille family, former owners of the château, it housed the tombs, recumbent figures and graves of the château's various owners until the 19th century. All that remains of Prieuré Sainte-Madeline, to the south of the village, is the former prior's dwelling: a large 15th-century building with a staircase tower levelled by the lean-to roof, and handsome windows with stone transoms and mullions.
