Visit Amboise

Admire one of the most beautiful postcards of the Loire Valley: the largest river in France, the sandbanks of the Ile d’Or, and the unique silhouette of the Royal Château of Amboise dominating the town. Yes, Amboise still embodies the spirit of ‘beauty’ imported from Italy during the Renaissance. The beach at Nazelles-Négron has recently been redeveloped to allow you to take in this iconic view.

Why visit Amboise?

When the kings of France returned from the wars in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries, they didn’t just bring back the glory of their military successes. Amazed by Milan and Naples, they brought back with them the dream of a new art of living. It was in Amboise in particular that this thirst for change took shape. Abandoning their sombre defensive fortresses, the kings built some splendid edifices here.

Visit the Château du Clos Lucé, the royal estate of Château Gaillard and the Royal Château of Amboise. Charles VIII, Louis XII, François 1er, Leonardo da Vinci and Dom Pacello are just some of the great people you will meet. And what magnificent gardens there are to discover!

Visiting Amboise as a family

While the models of Leonardo da Vinci at the Château du Clos Lucé are a big hit with young visitors, theAquarium de Touraine and the Parc des Mini-châteaux are sure-fire favourites. Not forgetting… the hike ” between royal lands and wild waters ” (7 km / 2 hours), the escape game ” the secrets of Amboise ” and the confectionery conservatory!

The must-haves d'Amboise

Where to walk in Amboise?

Attracted by the Loire Valley ‘s World Heritage status and the town’s three châteaux, visitors from all over the world stroll through the shopping streets. Like them, admire Max Ernst’s fountain “aux cracheurs, aux drôles, au génie” (“the spitters, the funny ones, the genius”), and Alexander Calder’s Crinkly. On the Ile d’Or and on the north bank, two other works catch the eye: the sculpture depicting Leonardo da Vinciin the guise of an Ancient God (by Amleto Cataldi) and the Tour d’Or Blanc designed by Jean-Michel Othoniel.

Push open the door of the church of Saint-Florentin, built at the behest of King Louis XI. Max Ingrand’s stained glass windows filter the light, illuminating the works of art that are occasionally installed here. Once past the Bigot chocolate factory (a local institution since 1915!), look up to see the belfry, also known as the clock tower, in the Rue Nationale. Or take a seat on the terrace at the Oscar et Suzette dance hall!

And don’t forget the nearby Poterie en Folie and Verrerie d’Art d’Amboise!

The Amboise market

Held on the quayside on Fridays and Sundays. With 200 stallholders, the Sunday market is one of the biggest in the region!

About Amboise

Amboise is on the Loire à Vélo and GR®3 cycle routes. There are electrically-assisted bike hire companies on site, so you can take a day’s ride through the vineyards of Montlouis-sur-Loire, as well as to Chenonceau Castle, via the “La voie royale” loop (45km). On a completely different note, don’t miss the chance to paddle one of Loire Aventure‘s Canadian canoes.

Rejuvenate in one of the wellness areas at Domaine des Thomeaux. Then embark on a vintage odyssey at the Ambacia cellars. You can also do some shopping at the Plou et Fils estate and the Gabillière estate (Amboise wine college), as well as at the Galland Terroir grocery shop.

The only remnant of the Duc de Choiseul’s immense estate, the Pagode de Chanteloup, will not fail to amaze you. And if you’re here during the summer, don’t miss the fireworks display on 14 July!
