April holidays 8 great plans for children

What can you do with your children during the spring holidays?

Visits, treasure hunts, aquariums, boat trips… with children or teenagers, find what you’re looking for in Touraine during the spring school holidays. Here are some ideas and tips for the whole family!

Dates for the April 2025 holidays

According to the academic zones, the April school holidays run from April 5 to May 4, 2025:

  • Zone A (Bordeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon, Grenoble, Limoges, Lyon, Poitiers): from April 19. Classes resume on 5 May.
  • Zone B (Aix-Marseille, Amiens, Caen, Lille, Nancy-Metz, Nantes, Nice, Orléans-Tours, Reims, Rennes, Rouen, Strasbourg): from 5 April. Classes resume on Tuesday 22 April, due to Easter Monday.
  • Zone C (Créteil, Montpellier, Paris, Toulouse, Versailles): from 12 April. Classes resume on 28 April.

1. Get some fresh air in the garden

Watch the spring blooms in the gardens with your family! Beautiful walks in the fresh air await you in the gardens of Villandry, Rivau, Valmer, Prieuré Saint Cosme, not forgetting the superb garden village of Chédigny. The children are running around the alleys, the parents are strolling peacefully: everyone’s happy!”

In the diary: the plant and spring festival at the château de la Bourdaisière, from 19 to 21 April.

2. April holiday walks

With the return of fine weather, succumb to the call of nature! Take your pick from a selection of moderate-distance walks suitable for shorter legs. One suggestion: the 2 hikes on the domaine de Candé, where you can also picnic and hire outdoor games from reception!!

By bike, there are around fifty signposted loops throughout Touraine, and several bike hire providers are present.

3. Team adventure!

Yes, you can discover the vineyards of Touraine with the kids! Try out the Oenological Escape Game at the Pierre & Bertrand Couly estate. With everyone’s keen sense of observation and a great team spirit, you won’t be able to resist any enigma! The same goes for the Cave de Vouvray, with the Secret de la Guilde Saint Martin, and Maison Lacheteau – Grands Caves Saint-Roch and its Sparkling Game!

Game with the family, too, at the Royal Fortress of Chinon, the first monument in Touraine to have initiated a “monument game“. While the game is based on the codes of escape games, here the whole fortress is the playground!

4. Seeing animals!

At the aquarium de Touraine, observe the fish of the Loire Valley (sturgeon, pike, pike-perch…) as well as more exotic species: seahorses, caimans and other white-tip sharks! Board the little train at the réserve de Beaumarchais, for a safari in the heart of a 30-hectare wildlife park, meeting deer, fallow deer, but also ostriches, bison, and wallabies. Visit the Goupillières troglodyte valley and its farm animals, as well as educational farms. Or book an organised nature outing in the Espaces Naturels Sensibles or in the PNR Loire Anjou Touraine.

5. Visits with children

Enjoy a variety of unusual initiatives at the châteaux, aimed particularly at young visitors:

  • A exhibition devoted to the animated film Léo, at the Château du Clos Lucé;
  • the treasure hunt at the château de Gizeux, but also the école des petits Mousquetaires at 11am (Monday to Friday), the costume tour at 3pm for 4-12 year olds (every day) and themed workshops at 4.30pm;
  • A monumental tree house, a exposition PlayMobil, and even a visit in the company of Anne de Bretagne at the château de Langeais ;
  • Fun tours with the Histopad tablet, at the Cité royale de Loches, the fortress of Chinon and the château royal d’Amboise;
  • The game card at the château d’Azay-le-Rideau, for a family challenge!

And review most of the Loire châteaux in the mini-châteaux park, in Amboise 😉

7. By boat!

Getting on a boat is already the start of a journey. So treat yourself to a lovely river trip, with beautiful scenery, expert commentary and fresh air! In April, departure from Chinon, Savonnières or Rochecorbon.

8. Workshops & courses

Head to the Centre d’art autour de la Vannerie to make some pretty wicker creations. At the Musée du Grand-Pressigny, we’re sending you back to prehistory, with various workshops. Learn how to make fire, for example! Finally, if some of your children are sometimes over the moon, a day’s internship at the Cormery Astronomical Observatory should please them!
